"Changing the world one great idea at a time."

"I am an artist painting in the language of abstraction. I see the opportunity to make something amazing. My work continually evolves and changes as I explore emotion and the idea of place. The verdant forests of North Carolina, the translucent skies of Hawaii, the sea surrounding the island of Kauai, the warmth of Fall in the Northwest, the power of Glacier National Park are all subjects explored in my work.

Series continues to examine secret forests as I am inspired by the beauty of nature: landscape, changing seasons, and the passing of time.

Fiery brush strokes and loose compositions evolve

While colors, light, weather and atmosphere act as the impetus in my work, the painting themselves evolve in recalling the memory of a place and continual moments of discovery. Early influences in painting were Monet and JMW Turner.

Experiments in impressionistic landscape painting eventually led to a language of abstraction related more to the female abstract expressionists, Joan Mitchell, Helen Frankenthaler. My goal is to keep the elements universal and invite the viewer to experience it on an emotional levels as well as visually. I am honored that my work is collected by private individuals and is found in public collections worldwide.

Joan Mitchell

“Working with mixed media, Cheryl paints and collages together abstract pieces that are rich with texture and hue and are quite evocative. Cheryl’s romanticism, independence, and passion for life’s pleasures unfold in each of her pieces.”

Faces and Forms

I have moments where I am drawn to faces and figurative studies and am enamored by the beauty of the body.

TOUCH ME-Texture

"I find real beauty in the passing of time. All things change and color with each season.

For me this is a constant source of fascination."

The voice that Cheryl Johnson seeks to capture and expresses in her images is the voice of nature that slowly but surely imposes change on all matter.

The broad, gestural marks and tactile surface of Cheryl Johnson's oil paintings are as bold as her gregarious color palette.

Hues blend and are subtle, suggesting her confident use of paint. Works are impactful exposing densely saturated color. Her oil paintings are worked with many layers and hues of paint, each adding and at times glazes appear barely distinguishable from the other, yet contributing to an overall depth and complexity.
