PROCESS

Desiring to put more places to breathe in my work I continually explore the power of line and shape. How does one find strength in oneself in a world of clutter? I continue to expand the possibilities of line, marks, and gesture by adding calligraphic strokes, and unconscious gestures. I am groping, searching and perhaps stumbling into myself. 

I hear a soft murmuring sound, perhaps a hummingbird’s wings as it feathers and wings its way forward and backward into my heart. I want my artwork to feel full and empty all at the same time. Shapes and line float in a playful way.  I experiment with monochromatic shape and multi-dimensional layering of line. Nonrepresentational and occasionally representational forms emerge. Circles become Squares. Triangle becomes voids. Black shapes become windows. I am focused on harmony and balance. Squiggles and marks bend into words. 

I want to be brave and use space with simple bold yellow, red, blue or green shapes resting against the monochromatic opposition. Perhaps black is a world all of its own.  I believe blacks are strong and powerful and once placed they read like fragments of larger forms torn or stacked. I desire for my work to become more simple, however, there is a strong pull for process and color that I wrestle to control. I want intimacy without restraint. Perhaps where heaven and earth collide. 

How wonderful monochromatic colors can be. Monochromatic color schemes are created from a single base hue and extended using its shades, tones, and tints. Tints are achieved by adding white and shades and tones are achieved by adding a darker color, grey or black.

Gestural abstraction refers to a way of making art. It is a process, not a movement. With an abstract gestural painting, the point is not what gets painted. The point is how it gets painted. Rather than applying paint to a surface in a controlled, premeditated way, gestural painters apply paint intuitively, physically, by dripping, pouring, splattering, wiping, dumping, spraying, or whatever.
