Johnson’s work is in constant flux moving into nature with her secret forests filled with color and emotion. Cheryl Johnson was born in Idaho in 1947 and currently resides and works in Charlotte, North Carolina. Nature forms the inspiration for her elegantly sumptuous abstracts akin to an orchestration of color, line, and space.
Her current work has shifted away from pure abstraction, gradually adding sculptural elements such as neon combined with elegantly brushed or poured elements. Cheryl is an artist with a deep engagement with color, harmony, dimensional space, and perception; her paintings offer a new perspective on the tropes of abstract painting.
Cheryl Johnson has spent over fifty years honing a distinctive method influenced by her travels and observations of place. She compresses the rich color and form of her native northwest with her coastal explorations of North and South Carolina into complex abstract landscape paintings that imbue material reality with a deep sense of place.
