THOUGHTS

Exploring emotion and creating a world from small details. Using an indigo palette with highlights and shadows of mist, red and green, these abstractions play with illumination, texture, harmony, and serendipity.

Experimenting with less. Graphite line and form in this series of striking compositions. Combining gestural expressive, bold strokes and a black and monochromatic palette with luminous vivid colors. Playing with balance, contrast, and asymmetry.

Originals start as a line or mark -Sumi ink drawings where the movement, though planned, is emotional and free. Looking for space and air and a place to breathe the awareness of the power of unfilled white space in conjunction with the calligraphic black of the ink. In some pieces, the artist adds gold and silver foil or cut collage vintage book pages, floating strings expand the gesture. With a keen eye to play the scale is approaching a surreal dreamscape.

For inspiration: A turn to nature, the landscape or the ocean. Perhaps looking up and see clouds simplified and alluring

Images Matter. They connect people, stories, and places. An object, a detail becomes meaningful and reveals a sensibility, a simplicity of emotion.

QUOTES

Susurrant: A soft, whispering or rustling sound; a murmur. I hear the low buzz of a hundred conversations.

“Every now and again, you will feel a dull ache in your soul. A gentle humming around your heart. A longing for something without a name. If I ever told you to obey anything, this would be it. Listen to the call of your authentic self. That part of you that lives just outside of your own skin. Let it have its way with you.I have died a hundred times trying to ignore it.” -Mia Hollow

“Mere color, unspoiled by meaning, and unallied with definite form, can speak to the soul in a thousand different ways.”—Oscar Wilde

PROCESS

Desiring to put more places to breathe in my work I continually explore the power of line and shape. How does one find strength in oneself in a world of clutter? I continue to expand the possibilities of line, marks, and gesture by adding calligraphic strokes, and unconscious gestures. I am groping, searching and perhaps stumbling into myself.

I hear a soft murmuring sound, perhaps a hummingbird’s wings as it feathers and wings its way forward and backward into my heart. I want my artwork to feel full and empty all at the same time. Shapes and line float in a playful way. I experiment with monochromatic shape and multi-dimensional layering of line. Nonrepresentational and occasionally representational forms emerge. Circles become Squares. Triangle becomes voids. Black shapes become windows. I am focused on harmony and balance. Squiggles and marks bend into words.

I want to be brave and use space with simple bold yellow, red, blue or green shapes resting against the monochromatic opposition. Perhaps black is a world all of its own. I believe blacks are strong and powerful and once placed they read like fragments of larger forms torn or stacked. I desire for my work to become more simple, however, there is a strong pull for process and color that I wrestle to control. I want intimacy without restraint. Perhaps where heaven and earth collide.

How wonderful monochromatic colors can be. Monochromatic color schemes are created from a single base hue and extended using its shades, tones, and tints. Tints are achieved by adding white and shades and tones are achieved by adding a darker color, grey or black.

Edward Hopper, “If you could say it in words, there would be no reason to paint”.

A love affair with yellow. Maybe yellow is the one color which is body temperature 37 degrees C.

And so, the ancient Egyptians believed it was the color of immortality.

Gestural abstraction refers to a way of making art. It is a process, not a movement. With an abstract gestural painting, the point is not what gets painted. The point is how it gets painted. Rather than applying paint to a surface in a controlled, premeditated way, gestural painters apply paint intuitively, physically, by dripping, pouring, splattering, wiping, dumping, spraying, or whatever.
